Auction Price Realized- Harold's Trip to the Sky Crockett Johnson
I usually don't report on Ebay auctions but the auction of a possible first of one of the Purple Crayon books by Crockett Johnson fetched a most reportable $565.
This is a nice surprise... I was just reading through your blog when I came across this post about "Harold's Trip to the Sky"... which is neat, since I was the person who sold it on ebay about 2 years ago. It was really a great find... wish I could find a similar copy of "Harold and the Purple Crayon" with DJ!
Hmmm, sorry I don't know if a first edition of this title states first or not. The book must be published by Harper and Brothers and NOT Harper & Row to be a true first and not the reprint edition.
Thanks Dana. My book is a Harper & Brothers, 1957. I understand H & B publishers, past a certain date, 1922 I believe, always indicated First Edition or FE on copyright page. Just wondering (hoping) the Crockett books might be an exception. Wishful thinking, I guess.
Harper & Brothers (and for that matter Harper & Row) were notoriously inconsistent when identifying first editions, ESPECIALLY in their childrens books. You may well have a first edition, I'm just not sure what the points for identification of a first are for this title. (ie stated or price on dustjacket etc)
Good to hear! I'll try to find a book on points of issue to see if there's anything said about Johnson's little books. The investigation is half the fun, eh? I wish it was a little easier though..(-;

You and me both! Johnson was a great illustrator and I'm always looking for his books, especially the illusive Purple Crayon.
Hello,
Just wondering, was this copy of Harold's Trip to the Sky stated "first edition" on the title page? I have a copy that may be first, so wondering...
Len

Thanks again.
